Hey Everyone, this is a fun one. Apple's 2011 Edition Macbook Pros had this awful underlying fault with the AMD GPU (graphic card) that caused it to fail, and thus your Mac wouldn't boot. It was such a prevalent problem that Apple issued a recall, but in classic Apple fashion they only "fixed" it if you experienced the failure, actually they only replaced the logic board with another having the same underlying GPU fault -- just to buy time to get out of the warranty period. Thanks Apple.
What the problem looks like:
Here's the Fix:
At this point the Mac will restart twice. First, it will run a bunch of text past, this is normal and will only happen once. It will chime and reboot again and run different text past, this is also normal and will happen on every reboot (it's quick). Finally, the Apple logo will appear and the boot will finish. Your mac should work normally now. If you want to disable the verbose mode (scrolling text at boot) after you've verified the fix is working do this:
You're welcome. If you need help, we charge $25 for the fix, done in 20 minutes. Call or text us.

Followed to the letter, now my Mac won’t start at all. Text just stops. No auto restart, nothing! Thanks!

You should be able to reset everything by resetting your SMC and VRAM again.

If it doesn't work, you have an ATI GPU. You need to replace AMD*.* by ATI*.*

Followed all the steps, exactly as instructed; Mac was hanging at the Apple logo; now, it starts with the scrolling texts and stops at the gray screen, won't start at all; is there a way to reverse this, back to the Apple logo hanging, so to try something else?

This really works, I was able to revive a late 2013 15" MacBook Pro that was tossed in a recycle bin with the note "Not Working" taped to the front of it. After many weeks of trying to figure out the issue I found this site and tried the directions here...magically the machine came back to life and is running a fresh install of Catalina perfectly.

Would this work for a 2011 27 inch iMac with the same problem?

For those of you where the above method did not work, I am on a 2011 Macbook Pro. I had a tech out here, but the machine was too far gone for any success on his part I decided to just load Ubuntu and use for linux box. As soon as i finished i decided to take the original install DVD for Snow Leopard and reinstall to see if graphics would work there. After four months of trying, including attempting to reinstall, i come up with Snow Leopard. Took the next step to Yosemite and from there i'm back to High Sierra. I've intentionally restarted several times in the past hour plus restarts for updates. I suspect the linux install wiped something off the disk that prevented my reinstall from DVD previously from successfully booting up.

Jordi I'm in the same boat! My 2011 early MBP had Yosemite. Chrome stopped working on it so I upgraded to High Sierra. After I did that it worked just fine except it wouldn't be able to wake up from sleep. I did a NVRAM reset and now the screen is just black. I think I need to reset the setttings so it knows the GPU is disabled. Anyone know how to do this?

I need to disable AMD Radeon 6970M on a mid 2011 27" iMac. What steps or modifications to the above procedure can I do to accomplish the disable?

Hi all, I found a solution to boot loop after the latest update. The solution is to use another macbook to open the faulty one in target disk mode. Just press T while booting the faulty one. Now in the functioning mac use the folder to access and retrieve your data. Just go to System Extensions folder and manually put the AMD3000.kext to another Extensions-off folder. (Make one if it's not there).
